During the summer of 2021, I returned to northern Italy after 15 years of living abroad. I soon began a photographic journey documenting the river culture of my native land. Shortly after, this journey became an emotional exploration of my childhood memories, a rediscovery of the river spots I used to explore with my friends during Summer seasons. Without noticing, I began to leave descriptive language in favor of a more intimate, symbolic, evocative one.
Costumi Postumi is the testimony of a small, primordial reality. A corner of the Italian Apennines that escapes history, resisting amidst the collapse of modernity and the slow destruction of the wild world. It is a journey into an untouched wonder, a time-crystallized memory of Italian Summer.
In this journey, I am both the observer and the participant. I am a swimmer, above all; I come to the river for the same reasons my subjects do. Most of the time they are close friends, sometimes even family. Costumi Postumi is part family album, part document, part poem—a collective one before it is mine. An ode to our land, our church. To the sanctuaries that forged us. To the places of peace and contemplation, of rumble and freedom. In which the boundary between man and Nature often blurs, and the mystery of the world is still accessible.
